Mission Statement
Stewart Street Elementary School faculty and staff work cooperatively and collaboratively with students, parents and community. We will set high expectations and create a positive learning environment for students, faculty and staff in order to enhance performance and promote development of critical skills. Students will be provided a challenging curriculum in a clean, safe, non-threatening and drug free environment. High-quality staff, innovative and research-based strategies, as well as the use of modern technology will be key in the delivery of instruction. The school will provide all students with opportunities for quality learning and the necessary support to ensure academic acceleration, consistent demonstration of appropriate social behavior, and continuous personal improvement. Excellence and a desire to learn will become a way of life.
Welcome to Our School
Stewart Street Elementary School is located in Quincy, Florida, a rural community approximately twenty-one miles west of Tallahassee, the state capital. One of fifteen public schools in Gadsden County, Stewart Street was originally built in 1965 for grades 1-8. The student population is composed of all elementary students within the boundaries south of Circle Drive on U. S. Highway 90, West to Lake Talquin Road 267, ranging south from Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. to Atlanta Street. In order to accommodate school enrollment, the grade composition has changed several times. Stewart Street presently serves grades Pre-K though 5th Grades, and houses the elementary Emotionally Handicapped population for the district. The student enrollment for the 2008-2009 school term is approximately 524.
The belief of our stake holders (parents, community, faculty and staff) is that all students can learn and that we will exert all our energies to assure the best possible learning experience for students who enter the doors of Stewart Street Elementary School. Special services are provided for exceptional students, which include units for Pre Kindergarten Handicapped, Emotionally Handicapped (EH), Educable Mentally Handicapped (EMH), Specific Learning Disability )SLD) Trainable Mentally Handicapped (TMH) and Speech and Language. Stewart Street is the center for all of the elementary Emotional Handicapped students in the Gadsden School District.
Two state universities, Florida Agriculture and Mechanical University and Florida State University are located 21 miles from Stewart Street Elementary School. In addition, Tallahassee Comunity College and Flagler College are also located in our neighboring county and offer support and resources to the school. Interns from the universities receive field teaching experiences and volunteer in classrooms at Stewart Street.
The social, academic, economic and cultural impact of the neighboring cities and institutions are advantageous in meeting the educational needs of the students.
